Modern Foreign Languages

Welcome to the MFL Department

Our MFL curriculum celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity, encouraging students to develop understanding, empathy, and a sense of appreciation for others.

Our curriculum is both academically rigorous and accessible, remaining flexible and responsive to the latest research and recommendations from recognised best practices.

We believe every student, regardless of background or ability, has the capacity and right to learn another language. We are committed to removing barriers to success, providing tailored support, and fostering an inclusive environment where all students thrive. Our aim is to equip every learner with valuable linguistic skills that enhance their academic and personal lives.

We offer French and Spanish. Through the study of these languages, students develop independent learning skills that are transferable to other disciplines, ensuring that the tools acquired in language learning contribute to success across the curriculum, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability.

Our curriculum equips students with the metacognitive skills necessary for lifelong learning. By understanding the processes of language acquisition, students are empowered to continue their intellectual journey beyond school, for personal, professional, or spiritual enrichment.

Key features include:

  • Vocabulary: Selected from the 2,000 most frequently used words, ensuring students gain confidence as quickly as possible and prioritizing fluency in both spoken and written contexts to prepare them for real-world language use.
  • Phonics: Employing a systematic approach to ensure accurate listening and pronunciation.
  • Grammar: Embedding structures in context to promote deeper understanding and practical application.

These three key elements are reinforced through spaced repetition, sufficiency, and retrieval practice to ensure mastery and long-term retention.

At St. Ursula’s Convent School, we view language learning as a transformative journey—a discovery of diverse cultures, the world, and universal love. Guided by the Ursuline motto, Serviam, we are committed to nurturing students to grow in knowledge and readiness to contribute positively to our modern, interconnected global community.
