Mathematics
Welcome to the Maths Department
Mathematics is a core subject with opportunities and provisions for cross-curricular participation and enquiries.
Students are encouraged and supported in their learning to develop a conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, fluency, and transfer of requisite skills.
The programme of study at key stage 3 is organised into distinct domains to develop fluency, extend mathematical reasoning, and develop problem-solving skills. Students consolidate their learning of the number system at key stage 2 and develop their ability to solve a wider range of problems with fluency in written methods for all four operations.
At St Ursula’s, our aim is to support students to develop fluency, enhance their ability to reason mathematically and apply these requisite skills in solving problems in real-life contexts. To this end, the learning content in the curriculum at key stage 3 and key stage 4 covers the full range of learning concepts contained in the GCSE Mathematics qualification. They are sequenced to facilitate the easy transfer of skills, achieve an optimum gradient of difficulty, promote inclusion and be accessible to all learners.
We also offer Functional Skills Qualification at Entry Level as an additional National Qualification in Mathematics wherever it is appropriate to the needs of students to improve their chances of accessing their next stage of Education, employment, or training.
